Colds and flu can spread so easily – particularly during the colder months when we spend more time indoors. Coughing and sneezing can cause germs to spread from one person to the next.

If you feel a cold coming on – or you’re already suffering through the symptoms – there are things you can do to make yourself feel a little better. Clearing up nasal congestion using FESS is a practical and easy step you can take to relieve a blocked nose and congestion, and it can help you breathe a little easier.

The FESS® range of nasal saline helps clear excess mucus, relieving blocked noses and nasal congestion.

Cold or flu?

Both the common cold and the flu share very similar symptoms – things like a sore throat, runny and blocked nose and nasal congestion. For many, a cough develops after four or five days, too.

If you’ve got the flu, then the symptoms above are likely to be much more acute. You may also experience fever, headache, fatigue and body aches and pains. And, unfortunately, the symptoms can persist for longer than the common cold.

While there are no treatments or cures that will get rid of your cold or flu faster, you can relieve your symptoms so you’re more comfortable while the infection runs its course. Remember, if you are at all concerned about your symptoms – particularly if you are at higher risk of complication from the flu – then you should see your doctor.

How FESS helps

When you get a cold or flu, the mucus layer in your nose becomes thicker, which can lead to congestion. A simple way to relieve this congestion is through regular use of non-medicated products. The FESS range of saline sprays, washes, and mists help keep your nasal passages moist.

Whether your congestion level is mild, moderate, or severe our range of nasal products can help you with your nose needs.

Dealing with mild to moderate congestion? Our FESS Nasal Sprays and Mists may be the option for you. Struggling with moderate to severe congestion? FESS® Nasal & Sinus Wash Gentle Strength or Extra Strength is just what you need.

These products thin and clear excess mucus to help relieve blocked noses and sinus congestion due to cold & flu.

Your nose acts as the first line of defence for your body by filtering particles from the air. Regular use of non-medicated FESS® nasal saline will also help keep your nose clear of excess mucus, allowing it to function at its best.

If you’ve had hayfever, then you will recognise the feeling of being congested and constantly sneezing. When pollen and dust strike, it can feel as though your nose will never stop running.

People young and old suffer from hayfever symptoms. For some, the congestion, sneezing and runny nose last for a few days; for others, it can last for months. If you’re a sufferer, one way to help reduce your symptoms is to wash away the allergens that cause the problem in the first place. FESS is a gentle and natural way to help relieve nasal and sinus congestion. When used prior to a medicated allergy and hayfever spray, the FESS range of products will help to improve the penetration of the medication.

The non-medicated FESS range of nasal saline helps to wash out your nasal passages.

What causes allergies and hayfever?

There are many triggers for allergies and hayfever – common ones include pollens, dust mites, animal dander and moulds.

Whatever your trigger, these tiny particles can enter your nose and cause hayfever.

How does FESS help to relieve symptoms of hayfever and allergies?

The non-medicated FESS range of nasal saline helps to wash away dust, pollen and other allergens that can cause hayfever.

Once they are gone, you are less likely to experience the symptoms of hayfever.

But FESS range of nasal saline takes things a step further. You can use FESS before a medicated nasal spray to help clear mucus from your nasal passages, which in turn improves the penetration of the medicated nasal spray.

FESS also helps to stimulate normal ‘mucocillary flow’ – the nose’s natural defense mechanism – by thinning the nasal mucus so that it flows more easily. The tiny hairs inside your nasal passages combined with mucus help traps and remove dust, pollen, bacteria and other pollutants from the air we breathe. Using FESS daily helps keep this system in optimum condition.

FESS® Nasal Defence is a saline nasal spray for a natural way to help relieve nasal congestion. It thins mucus and moisturises dry nasal passages, helping to restore the nose’s natural defence and clearing system (the mucociliary clearance system). As a result breathing and comfort are improved.

FESS® Nasal Defence also contains added moisturisers and Australian Tea Tree Oil to
moisturise dry nasal passages and wash away airborne bacteria, dust and pollutants.
FESS® Nasal Defence contains only gentle ingredients that do not cause rebound congestion when their effects wear off.

FESS® Nasal Defence helps guard against airborne bacteria

Why do aeroplanes dry you up so much?

The air inside the aircraft cabin during a flight is drier than normal. The cabin is also circulated with a combination of fresh and recycled air which may impair air quality and reduce humidity to less than 20%. This very low humidity can dry out the mucous membranes of your nose while the combined effects of dry and recycled air can lead to nasal congestion and a dry irritated nose.

Support your natural defence system against airborne infections

The Mucociliary Clearance System is part of your body’s shield against airborne infections like colds. The dry air in the aircraft cabin increases nasal discomfort, and may increase your chance of developing an upper respiratory tract infection. FESS® Nasal Defence can help ensure the health of the nasal passages by moisturising dry nasal passages and washing away airborne bacteria, dust and pollutants.

How can you combat low humidity environments?

Given that there is not enough moisture in the air around you on an aeroplane, you may need some extra help to keep your nasal passages moist. With a non-medicated nasal spray in your carry on, plus a bottle of water to sip on during your flight, you’ll arrive at your final destination breathing much easier.

It’s also a good idea to avoid some of the other things that can make you dehydrated. This includes alcohol and caffeinated drinks – try to steer clear of these while you’re waiting for your departure. Instead, sip on water or Hydralyte to hydrate your system before and during the flight.

How does FESS® Nasal Defence help with travel?

FESS® Nasal Defence is a non-medicated nasal spray that helps to moisturise your nose and make your flight more comfortable. You can use it before boarding the plane, during the flight and upon touchdown to wash away airborne pathogens, dust and other pollutants.

With added moisturisers and Tea Tree Oil, FESS® Nasal Defence provides a natural way to help relieve nasal dryness caused by the dry air inside an aeroplane cabin.

When a blocked nose* makes it hard to get a good night’s sleep, FESS can help you breathe easier.

A blocked or stuffy feeling in your nose which can be caused by allergies (such as hayfever), sinus infections, cold & flu – can make sleeping difficult, leaving you feeling tired and sleepy during the day. Use FESS to help ease nasal congestion and make breathing easier when it’s time for sleep.

When it’s time for sleep…

Feeling ‘stuffed up’ and having a blocked nose can interfere with your sleep.
Normally, your nose and sinuses are able to clear themselves, but sometimes this doesn’t happen as well as it should:

  • Allergies, sinus infections, cold & flu can cause inflammation and swelling of the moist, inner lining of your nose
  • This can reduce the size of the air passages making breathing through your nose more difficult, particularly at night or when lying down
  • Your nose may also be producing extra amounts of mucus or the mucus may be thicker and starts to block the already swollen nasal passages. This can lead to nasal congestion, painful sinuses and postnasal drip (where mucus from your nose or sinuses drips down the back of your throat) – all of which may interfere with how well you sleep.

Breathe easier, sleep easier with the FESS nasal saline range.

…rethink your sleep routine with FESS

So when it’s time to sleep and a blocked or stuffy nose makes it hard to get the rest you need – try making FESS part of your regular night-time routine to help you breathe easier:

Cleanse your nose of congestion

Moisturise your nose

Whether it’s an uncomfortable dryness inside your nasal passages or a problem with a chafed, sore nose the FESS range can help: FESS saline sprays and washes can help moisten your nasal passages to help relieve dryness:

  • Airway dryness can be a common problem if you have to use oxygen or a CPAP machine
  • Using some over-the-counter products and prescription medications (such as antihistamines and decongestants) can also dry out your nasal passages.

FESS Dry Nose Oil Spray helps provide relief from uncomfortable and troublesome nasal dryness and crusting that can often be a problem if you regularly have to use oxygen, a CPAP machine or nasal medications. The oil helps lubricate and moisturise dry nasal passages while helping to reduce irritation and itching.

How FESS works

Your nose has a self-clearing system that can remove allergens, dust, pollen, and other pollutants from your nasal passage.

When there is excess mucus and congestion this self-clearing system may not function at its best. Using FESS Nasal Spray daily can help restore and optimise this self-clearing system.

The nose is the body’s first line of defence against inhaled bacteria, viruses, pollutants, pet dander, dust, pollen, and other allergens.

How does the Mucociliary Clearance System work?

The Mucociliary Clearance System exists to provide protection against mild upper respiratory tract infections. It is part of your body’s defence against inhaled pollen, dust, germs and allergens.

The system is made up of a thin layer of mucus which coats your nasal membranes, and microscopic hairs called cilia. The thin mucus traps the inhaled germs, dust and allergens, and the tiny cilia hairs push the mucus down the back of your throat towards your stomach. There, the germs, dust and allergens are destroyed by the strong stomach acid. It is efficient and effective, as long as it’s working well.
Maintenance of the Mucociliary Clearance System is at the forefront of nasal health because when the system is impaired it can result in ailments such as hayfever and sinusitis.

How does the Mucociliary Clearance System become impaired?

If your mucus isn’t the right consistency then your Mucociliary Clearance System breaks down. When nasal mucus thickens or you produce extra mucus from a common cold, it becomes difficult for the cilia hairs to move the mucus down into your stomach.

How does FESS help to maintain the health of your Mucociliary Clearance System?

It’s important to keep the nasal mucus thin, less sticky and easier to move. By thinning the mucus and keeping the cilia hairs mobile your body can move the inhaled pathogens, dust and allergens to your stomach where they can be destroyed by stomach acid.
The FESS® range of nasal sprays are designed to thin the nasal mucus and wash away allergens, dust and pollutants. By using a FESS nasal spray everyday you can help your body to maintain better nasal health.
